Newbery, Caldecott, and Coretta Scott King Books

The Newbery, Caldecott, and Coretta Scott King Book awards are awards that are given out to authors and illustrators in order to recognize their outstanding work in children's literature.

We are Water Protectors Written by Coralike Linderson and Illustrated by Michaela Goade.

  • This book tells the story of a young girl named Ojibwe and how she fights against an oil pipeline in order to protect the water supply of her community. This story teaches us the importance of being courageous and advocating for oneself. 
This book received the Caldecott medal in 2021 for its amazing illustrations and excellence in artist technique. 


Legendborn written by Tracy Deonn

  • This book tell us the story of a young girl named Bree whose mother tragically passed away in an accident. Bree then joins a program for bright high school students. On her first nigh on campus Bree witnesses magic.  


This book won a Coretta Scott King for new talent in 2020. This book specifically won an award for new talent which is giving to new emerging authors with exceptional works. 







The One and Only Ivan written by Katherine Applegate


  • This book tells the story of a gorilla named Ivan who performs at an an arcade in a small mall. Ivan is accustomed to this life but everything changes when he meets Ruby who is a small baby elephant. Ruby is Ivan's encouragement to fight for a better life for the both of them. This story tells us his journey to find this new life.
This book won a Newbery medal in 2013. This book won this award due to its compelling story told from the perspective of a gorilla. This books explores themes of friendship and self-discovery.

  1. The Legend Born book looks like it could also be a Caldecott Award as well. The cover graphics are amazing!
